Ski Holidays in April

With Easter being so late this year, many ski resorts are staying open until mid to late April! Some of Les Portes du Soleil lifts in particular don’t close until 27th April, giving you plenty of time to book your spring ski holiday! It doesn’t matter whether you’ve already been this winter or not, there are many benefits to coming to Morzine/Les Gets in April!

Longer days

Skiing in December/January often meant getting up in the dark, and getting home in the dark. The days have been progressively getting longer as the season’s gone on, but on Sunday 30th March, the clocks go forward, meaning another extra hour of daylight! This is great news for people who like to spend the whole day up the mountain, and then sit in the sun for après-ski after the lifts have closed. Sounds like a perfect day to me!

Sunshine!

More often than not, April in the Alps doesn’t disappoint when it comes to glorious weather for skiing. Although this can mean slushy snow in the afternoon, it’s best to go in the morning, as the snow freezes overnight, leaving hard-packed groomed pistes, that soften slightly towards mid-morning, providing the best piste conditions for the day. You can have a lovely lunch on the mountain in the sun, or ski right through dinner time (while the pistes are quieter) and then top up your tan during après ski in the afternoon.

The sunny weather also opens up other activities to do, being the perfect weather and temperature for walking, climbing, and most other open-air activities.

People tend to think that all the snow will melt away in April, but that’s not the case. Two years ago, the last day of the season (late April) was a bluebird powder day in Avoriaz, and last year there was still snow on the pistes up until June!

Less people

As April is late in the season, there tends to be much fewer people on the slopes. That means more space on the piste, and less time in queues. Even in the Easter holidays, the crowds are nothing compared to February half term, or New Year week. Who doesn’t love a big open piste without being cut up by a thousand other skiers/boarders??

It’s Cheap

You can find some amazing bargains in April, as holiday companies drop their prices big time to lure people away for a sunny ski holiday. Even here at Mountain Xtra, we are proud to admit we have some cracking deals that you’d be silly not to take advantage of (see below for deals).

Lift pass prices are even dropping in April, by 20% for Portes du Soleil passes, and 15% for Morzine/Les Gets passes. Flights are usually pretty cheap too! With April price drops, often ski holidays are half the price of a February holiday, making it the ideal time to come to the Alps!
